A Centurion

In Matthew 8:5-13 Jesus is in Capernaum, and a centurion came up to him. The Centurion said to Jesus “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” Now let’s pause right here and notice 4 major things about this passage.

The first thing to notice here is that the centurion acknowledged and noticed that Jesus was Lord. He knew that, because Jesus is the son of God, he could heal his servant.

The second thing is that this man is a man of power and wealth, he has to be to have a servant of his own.

The third thing is that he is a man of compassion because he is concerned about his servant. Being a man of great power (it goes on to say, “I [the centurion] too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me”) and wealth. A centurion is a commander of a century, which means he has to be tough and mean, yet he still shows kindness and love for his servant.

The fourth thing is that the centurion felt unworthy. Jesus says, “I will come and heal him,” yet the centurion said, “Lord I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.” WOW OH WOW! A man of great authority knew he was too unworthy to have Jesus in his home, yet because he has faith in Christ he knew that even from afar Jesus would heal his servant. Because the scripture says that Jesus “marveled” at this man’s faith. ISN’T THAT AMAZING!!! Wouldn’t you want to have faith as big as mountains that makes the King of King’s MARVEL at it? BUT that’s not all! Jesus then says, “Truly I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.” Oh my stars! NOW that’s amazing! NOT only did Jesus marvel at this man’s faith, but he pointed out how unique it is. This man has a faith that we all must strive for- a faith that can not be compared to any other- a CRAZY FAITH!!!

Jesus then says, “Go; let it be done for as you believed.” Then at that very moment the servant was healed! WOW! HOW amazing is that!!! With Jesus on our side, amazing things can happen (Psalms 18).

Jesus has the authority of God to heal others!!! What’s even better is no matter how the world views you, Christ will view you as his own. Even though the world viewed a servant as someone of lower class who might be overlooked, God viewed him as his child. The world doesn’t decide who is worthy of healing, love, joy, and life!!! No one deserves this, yet God has given it to us as a gift (Ephesians 2:8). No matter what color or job you have Christ has and will accept you for who you are!!!

This is wonderful. So often, those of us who know a passage well can re-read a passage like this over again and lose the wonder and excitement. We take for it for grated because we already heard it. Yet you rightly capture the excitement and wonder we should all have at this passage because what we see is really amazing and deserving of awe. Thank you for reminding me of that, and helping me see it with fresh eyes.
